Environmental Monitoring and Assessment
Globally, the environmental aspects of pipeline systems are of major concern and are increasingly so as regulatory authorities around the world become less tolerant of potential releases of polluting material into the environment, periodic programmes of environmental monitoring and assessment are essential. The concerns are of particular relevance to subsea pipeline installations, therefore the ability to rapidly detect and locate leakages of gas or oil to the surrounding waters is of paramount importance.
Concerns govern that hydrocarbon leaks into the ocean must be avoided to prevent ecological and environmental damage or, in some cases, large scale disasters. To minimise these potential problems, marine environmental monitoring programs in the form of subsea leak detection surveys is required. Constant pipeline monitoring provides the data necessary to make the correct maintenance decisions.
